The Power of a Deep Breath

Yoga, Tai Chi, and Meditation; three practices that are widely known to be great at relieving stress, feature one key practice that I belive to be the secret of their success, and that is deep breathing.

It is a proven fact that slowing down and taking a deep breath greatly reduces stress, and many of us know that one of the true secrets to not only hapiness, but financial and relationship success resides in eliminating stress. Not only is it good at eliminating stress, but in fact our bodies are designed to release about 70% of all toxins through breathing, giving deep breaths significant health benifits as well.

How exactly does deep breathing relieve stress? Think about your body when you are angry, stressed, scared, or tense. Your muscles are generally contracted, tight and uncomfortable. Deep breathing allows them to retern to a relaxed state. This makes you feel less physically stressed. Oxidization of the brain reduces anxiety and relieves mental stress as well.

There are many other perks to breathing deeply and purposfully as well. It makes you live longer, improves posture, strengthens your immune system, and builds muscle. So when you feel stressed, scared, or unhappy, just take a breather!
